The Customer

Sukut Construction is a General Heavy Civil Engineering Contractor with over 50 years of superior performance on private, public, commercial, and industrial projects throughout California. A leading grading and excavating company in the state, Sukut owns and maintains a fleet of more than 200 heavy CAT machines. In recent years, the company has received more than 30 industry honors, including “Contractor of the Year” and “Best Company to Work For.”

Sukut has always embraced modern technologies to improve operations. About six years ago, the company implemented Viewpoint Vista™ to centralize information and make it more accessible across the organization. But Vista alone couldn’t give them the analytics capabilities their business needed.

The Challenge: Too Much Data, Too Few Answers

The Vista ERP system improved data access and operations in many ways, but it was not a complete solution for reporting and analysis. The business team still had to pull reports from multiple modules to monitor the status of a single job, a process that was both time-consuming and prone to user error.

Adding to the frustration: the team knew they were sitting on an enormous amount of valuable data inside Vista but weren’t using it to the company’s best advantage. They also couldn’t easily combine Vista data with information from other core systems to build a more complete picture of the business.

On top of that, senior management wanted a consolidated dashboard to monitor the business at a glance with full mobile access for reports on the go or at the job site. The data was there. The challenge was figuring out how to analyze it and present it in a way that was actually useful.

The Solution: Connecting Vista to Power BI with QuickLaunch

Construction Analytics with Power BI and QuickLaunch

The Sukut team didn’t have the time or in-house expertise to build a custom solution. After evaluating several leading visualization tools, they selected Microsoft® Power BI based on its features and market position. They quickly discovered, however, that connecting Power BI to Viewpoint Vista and building meaningful reports was far from simple.

Sukut turned to QuickLaunch Analytics to help turn their corporate data into a corporate asset. QuickLaunch for Viewpoint Vista connects Vista and other enterprise data to Power BI to enable self-service analytics without the heavy lifting of building a custom data architecture from scratch.

Working together, the Sukut and QuickLaunch Analytics teams first focused on building tabular models and dashboards to support financial reporting. The approach was deliberate and collaborative, starting with the highest-priority use cases and building out from there.

“QuickLaunch Analytics has shown us how to get the most out of Power BI.”

The Results: Reporting That Keeps Up with the Business

Finance Reporting: From Manual Copies to Dynamic Dashboards

Before QuickLaunch, the finance staff made copies upon copies of reports and struggled to keep them current. Today, they have consolidated, shareable reports and dashboards that update dynamically as the data changes. Management now has access to Power BI KPI dashboards to monitor the business at a glance, from the office or from anywhere, with the ability to drill down into the details that matter.

The team initially expected to need only a few Power BI licenses. They quickly grew to 10 users and anticipate reaching 40 to 50 users as adoption expands across the organization.

“It took some time to build out the dashboards and reports we wanted, but once done, the upside is tremendous. Totally worth the investment.”

Job Cost Reporting: Putting Data in the Field

With financial reporting well underway, the team turned their attention to the Job Cost dashboard, one of the highest-value opportunities for field operations. Logging into the ERP system from a job site is completely impractical from a computer and simply not possible from a mobile device.

Sukut’s vision is for foremen to access Power BI reports and dashboards directly from iPads on the job site, giving field teams the real-time data they need to make faster, better decisions. The potential impact on project efficiency and profitability is significant.

Looking Forward: Equipment and Beyond

After Job Cost reporting is complete, Sukut plans to tackle the Equipment module and apply similar dashboards across its sister companies.

Equipment utilization is at the core of heavy civil construction profitability. When expensive machinery sits idle, the company loses money on its capital investment. Sukut currently tracks equipment assets across B2W Schedule, VisionLink, and Samsara but can’t easily combine that data with related Vista project data.

With QuickLaunch and Power BI, the team will be able to bring these datasets together for deeper equipment utilization analysis. One powerful example: tracking fuel costs for an individual piece of machinery and correlating those expenses against actual run-time can surface reporting discrepancies or identify idle equipment that could be redeployed to other projects. This reduces costs and improving returns on capital.

“The Equipment Management team will soon have real-time access to equipment information, telematics, and financial information combined from multiple sources to make important business decisions.”

Partnering for Success

Working with QuickLaunch Analytics helped Sukut shorten the implementation cycle and gave the team a clear picture of what was possible with a modern BI environment. The QuickLaunch team brought deep product expertise and a genuine commitment to client outcomes.

Training also played a central role in both project success and user adoption. Sukut received training from QuickLaunch Analytics as part of the implementation process and plans to continue building internal knowledge as more users come on board.

“The QuickLaunch Analytics team has an exceptionally high level of expertise in what they do, and will go above and beyond for the client. Their involvement has been critical to our success.”
